Introduction

In the recent past, there have been accounting and auditing scandals in the United States, which began with Enron and became widespread and had a global impact. Various factors played a dominant role in the formation of scandals. The most important of these factors are problems, deficiencies, inefficiencies and fraudulent practices associated with some basic business functions (financial reporting, accounting, auditing, internal control, finance, oversight, corporate governance etc). In addition to this, the deliberate damage and violation of ethical principles such as accuracy, honesty, transparency, independence and accountability in scandals has also been secondary. Consequently, auditing, accounting, internal control, finance and corporate governance functions have become vitally important along with the ethical principles following the scandals.

Moreover, with the lessons learned from the scandals and the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act of 2002 enacted in the United States following the scandals, the importance of these essential functions become even more prominent in the world. These functions have become critical “safety valves” for the protection of the mutual interests of all stakeholders in terms of achieving corporate goals, corporate governance and quality assurance, as well as transparency, accuracy, accountability, sustainability and competitiveness.

On the other hand, in addition to the scandals, a process of change and development has been taking place simultaneously throughout the world in recent years. During this period, a series of changes, new trends and developments have profound and multi-dimensional impact of business ecosystem and all strategic business functions and activities, including our daily lives.
